Regulate music industry

Letters

THE local music industry in Papua New Guinea has been influential and the fastest growing industry domestically.
Music has both positive and negative implications.
Unlike any other industry, music seems to be the centre of influence to the entire world.
Music map created to showcase creativity, talent, address certain issues through self-expression and their inner emotions. According to a Blog-post by; R. Roberts (2019), music was purposely created to express and modulate emotions.
Today people turned music from its original intended purpose to dark rooted evil desires.
It is sad to see that many of our youths in Papua New Guinea are chained to the deep rooted evil which they are unaware of.
The saddest reality to it is, music industry today seems to promote some kind of evil intentions which follows direct impact on the life of young people in our country. Speaking of evil desires, when you carefully study the lyrics of many songs today, most of the lyrics promotes abuse, drug and sex.
Many PNG singers and song writers today, follow the same pattern of the world music industry, creating contents that promote those agendas.
The word meri (woman) seems to become a household or default lyrics to every PNG artists, whether upcoming or current artist, this word now has given the power to make an ordinary song become the hit-song in the local chart list.
This is a new trend, for any upcoming PNG artist to become popular in the local music industry, they must use this word as key to enter the local hall of fame.
The continuous repetition of this word on various platforms such as radio stations make the audience become obsessed with woman and do all sorts of acts that are not right.
For instance, young people today when they see a pretty girl passing-by, they whistle and do all sorts of silly things just to intimidate her.
One may wonder why these guys are doing this.
Well the answer is simple, through continuous listening of those meri, lewa and stuck-one songs, as a result those lyrics of the songs influence their character.
That is how powerful and influential pact music can do to influence behaviour.
Therefore, due to the negative impact of these songs on young generation, I would like to call upon the Government to regulate the local music industry by putting in place certain policies or laws that will regulate the industry.
This industry is one of the influential industry, if the Government does not do anything to control it, our young generation will end up getting obsessed with things that does not matter.
Lastly, to all the local artists out there, I would like to kindly ask you guys to use your talent and create positive content that will make a positive impact on the lives of the people.
I’m sure we have lots of issues to be addressed within our country, so make yourself useful by addressing those issues instead of wasting time on singing about meri.

  • It is very sad and true, no respect for women & girls.
Confucius in the great power music page 85 says : IF ONE SHOULD DESIRE TO KNOW WHETHER A KINGDOM OR COUNTRY IS WELL GOVERNED, IF IT’S MORAL A GOOD OR BAD, THE QUALITY OF MUSIC WILL FURNISH THE ANSWER.
CHARACTER IS THE BACKBONE OF OUR HUMAN CULTURE, AND THE MUSIC IS THE FLOWERING OF CHARACTER.
