RELATIVES of a man allegedly shot dead by police at Yawasoro, west of Wewak, last weekend want the officer responsible dealt with by the law.

Merpyn Yaprei, 25, of Lumi, West Sepik, was shot between 6pm and 7pm last Saturday at his sister’s home at Yawasoro.

The relatives claimed that they knew who the officer was as he was related to them through marriage.

Dad Andrew Yaprei said: “We want the policeman and other members who were with him during the shooting to be arrested and charged. Let them fight out their case in court.

“We want the relatives of the policemen arrested and charged because they may have conspired with their relative to kill my son.”

Yaprei said his son was shot when he intervened in a domestic row between his sister and her husband.

Provincial police commander Chief Supt Joe Poma urged relatives to cooperate with police who wanted the incident thoroughly investigated.

“Police have nothing to conceal, we have recorded the incident and will have it investigated.
