THE Salamaua local level government (LLG) and Huon Gulf administration are looking at relocating the government station which is being threatened by the rising sea level, an official says.
Salamaua LLG manager Clifford Wembiwong said the effects of climate change had seen the sea level rising and big waves had been washing away chunks of land from the LLG headquarters area.
Now the LLG is thinking of relocating its headquarters.
Wembiwong said many landowners in the LLG were offering their land for the new station.
“The sea has taken its course and there’s nothing much we can do,” he said.
“Soon, the sea will wash this place out. It has washed away six posts from my house already.
“Where the government station is situated now is a historical site with many important things, but we can’t stop nature from taking its course and the only way now is to relocate.”
