Remington Group providing jobs for young graduates

THE Remington Group had embarked on providing job opportunities for young Papua New Guineans when they graduate from higher institutions, chief executive Peter Goodwin says.
He told students at Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI) in Port Moresby last Thursday that the group currently has the apprentice programme and the technical vocational education training (TVET) scholarship programme which were running as pilot project at two institutions – DBTI (Taurama) and Don Bosco Technical Secondary School (Gabutu).
“We have opportunities for information technology (IT), technicians, there are office and administration opportunities. We employ 150 Papua New Guineans and we are always looking for great people,” Goodwin said.
“That’s why we want to get into a relationship with Don Bosco Technological Institute so that we can work together to provide you with jobs when you come out the other end of your studies.”
Remington group human resource manager Natasha Austin said the apprenticeship programme was a four-year programme that the company would be facilitating in collaboration with the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR) through the National Apprenticeship Trade and Testing Board (NATTB).
She said the successful apprentice would sign a tripartite contract that agreed to terms and conditions of both Remington and DLIR through NATTB.
“When the apprentices go in the first year, they are expected to work and acquire the basic skills and competencies that are needed and in the second year, they get to do the block course,” Austin said.
“When they are on block course, they are on full pay because it is considered as work. And at the end of the fourth year, they get to graduate with a nationally recognised trade certificate.
“We’ve come up with an initiative where we want to sponsor students who are in their final year and are promising students but at the same time they have financial limitations to pay for their school fees.”
Austin said application for the scholarship and apprenticeship programmes open next month.
