Remote community urged to look after teachers, Govt assets

Education

THE Yokia community situated in the remotest part of Saidor local level government in Madang was told to look after teachers and other Government assets within the school’s premises.
The Yokia Elementary School recently celebrated the opening of its new double classroom. Education Minister Jimmy Uguro told the community to take ownership of the classroom.
“The only way to true change is through education,” Uguro, who is Usino-Bundi MP, said.
“Students must take learning seriously.” Teacher-in-charge Tobias Mumuronge told The National that the classroom was built with the support from the local community.
He said the school was registered in 2019, however, due to its remoteness, it wasn’t possible to bring in teachers and building materials from outside. It was around that time he met the then minister who had helped made it possible for him to enter Madang Teachers’ College.
Mumuronge is now the teacher-in-charge of the Yokia Elementary School.
