KUNDIAWA town mayor Wapia Kuglame has urged owners to replace old buildings in the town with new ones.
He said that many old buildings posed a major threat to other commercial buildings and to the town.
Kuglame said many buildings were falling apart and electrical wiring was not in order, which could cause a fire at any time.
“My inspectors will carry out inspections on all commercial buildings in the town to ensure that they all meet the standard required, this including fire protection,” he said.
Kuglame said no inspection was carried out on the buildings for a long time to ensure they met safety standards.
If they come across any building that poses a fire risk or their timber infected or eaten by away by termites and about to collapse during their inspection in May or June, they would issue notices to the owners to demolish them and build new ones.
“It’s not good to keep on repainting outside the shops and making them look new when the inside is deteriorating and ready to collapse or go up in flames,”  Kuglame said.
He believed the buildings were built a long time ago and the owners had already made enough money from them.
