Rename airport after Sir Michael

Letters

JUST as everyone in the country, I am saddened about the passing of our great chief and the principal architect of our beloved Papua New Guinea, Sir Michael Sana Somare.
Many people have said many things in paying their respect and tribute to this great icon of modern-day PNG.
I humbly suggest that Jackson International Airport be renamed “The Sir Michael Somare International Airport”.
The Israelis have done that for their first prime minister David Ben Gurion “The David Ben Gurion International Airport”.
Of course, Gurion is the father of modern-day Israel and, if I may add, in the United States, the JFK International Airport in New York City after the late John F Kennedy.
It will, I believe be a fitting tribute to our first prime minister.
My relationship with the Somares goes back many years and was through the highly respected Lady Veronica (the mother of the nation).
Lady Veronica and my late wife Maria Makon Yonnie grew up at the Boram Hospital Compound at Wewak together where their fathers worked at the hospital in the early 1960’s and 70’s.
Lady Veronica was like a big sister to my wife.
To Lady Veronica, I am saddened to hear that the chief has left us.
Thank you God for giving Sir Michael to PNG.

John Tokunai,
Gordon

  • I think the Parliament should be named Somare House. Thus no other infrastructure in PNG be named Somare and the current ones carrying his name should be removed.
