RENEWABLE resources are the future of the country, says acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natural Resources and Environment Dr Samson Laup.

He told the university’s new intakes on Monday when opening their orientation week that non-renewable resources had “expiry dates” which meant that renewable resources should be the focus of the country.

“We must advance from brown economy to green economy then to the golden economy,” he said.

Laup said the brown economy, mining industry, and the green industry, agriculture, were already generating revenue for the country.

However, he said the country had to focus on tapping into the golden economy, energy, which was the golden thread connecting economic growth, social equity and environmental sustainability.

“About 13 per cent of PNG’s population have access to electricity and the renewable energy is surely the way forward for the country.”

He said the university’s aim was to teach students “to expand their mental capacity”.
