Report extra fees, says Fleming

BANK South Pacific (BSP) cardholders who are charged extra fees from the bank’s electronic funds transfer at point of sale (Eftpos) merchants should report the matter to the bank, chief executive Robin Fleming says.
Responding to queries from The National following complaints from BSP customers who have been charged extra fees at BSP Eftpos terminals in the country, Fleming said customers should not be charged additional fees.
He said merchants who continued to charge extra fees would result in the bank removing the Eftpos terminals from their business.
“BSP regularly informs customers that they should not pay additional fees to any merchant who tries to apply their own surcharge for use of a BSP merchant terminal,” Fleming told The National.
“When BSP is advised we will warn merchants and if there are ongoing and continued breaches BSP will withdraw the terminal from the merchant.
“We do try to use this as a last resort though as withdrawal of the terminal can affect customers in remote areas where there is limited access to banking services,” Fleming said.
“BSP encourages customers to use merchants who do not apply a surcharge, especially where there are a number of merchants they can choose from, and also to report to BSP merchants who do apply their own surcharges,” he said.
The bank also confirmed on its customer notice that Eftpos merchants were bound by terms and conditions that prohibit them from making any additional charges to BSP cardholders.

  • Thank you Mr Fleming. Please give contact details at BSP to report these merchants. We the retail customers are fed up and helpless at being charged K1 or K3 at Eftpos stations.

  • This is what happening in most Asians Operating shops up in the highlands of PNG…When you want cash backs after paying for the goods they usually charged an extra K10 for an K100 cash back…

  • I concur with you Mr. Flemming. Please leave contact details so I can report as I am a victim of such practice.
