Rescuers to release bodies to families
TWELVE bodies, including one recently found in the Sarawaget Range, are still under the care of local rescuers and will likely be released to the families this week.
Lutheran mission’s centenary celebration chairman Mainuwe Fanamu said 27 local rescuers were in Lae and would release the bodies to their families.
“I met with the local rescuers and we will meet this week with the provincial disaster team, the families of the dead and others to release the bodies and help the rescuers,” he said.
“The bodies are still under the rescuers’ care.
“We will have a meeting and they will release the bodies to their families.
“How the families want to appreciate them is up to the families.
“What the rescuers did was an emergency work and the disaster office will be looking at thanking them in their own way.”
Fanamu said he had talked to the families of the deceased on how they could help the rescuers in their stay in Lae and return home.
Fanamu said all parties concerned in the matter should work together to put it to rest.
Local rescue team leader Vincent Kowang said when releasing the bodies to the families, they would also release their spirits as part of their traditional practice.
