Reserves to stay: Parkop
The National, Wednesday February 18th, 2015
RESERVE police will continue to operate in the National Capital District, Governor Powes Parkop said.
He said unless a formal letter was received by the NCD providing reasons why it should be disbanded, the reserves would carry on.
“We don’t conduct Government decisions through the media. No formal letter has been sent by the police commissioner or gazetted,” Parkop said.
Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki announced the decommissioning of the NCDC reserve police unit along with the BSP reserves following the death of two men at Hanuabada village last month.
Parkop said he would allow the reserves to continue operating as they were there to help implement laws that the NCDC made.
“I don’t want to bring in police to implement NCDC laws as it will cost extra,” he said.
“If I bring in police personnel to implement NCDC laws, everyone knows they will expect me to pay them for doing their job again, which they earn a salary from.”
NCDC Acting Police Commissioner operations Jerry Frank confirmed that a formal letter had not been sent to the NCDC or Parkop.
“We are still in the process of sending a formal letter to the governor informing him of the decommissioning of the NCDC police reserves and BSP police reserves,” he said.
