 A NEW police command has been created to tackle increasing  transnational crime on the common borders with Indonesia and Australia.

The announcement was made yesterday along with major reshuffles of top officers in the force by Police Commissioner Gari Baki

Crimes director Chief Supt Donald Yamasombi has been tasked to set up the new command to enforce law and order to prevent arms and drug smuggling, and human trafficking on the borders along Western, and East and West Sepik.

Baki said that Yamasombi would have to set up his command office in Madang to oversee the operation and administration of the command. 

“For now, he will operate at the police headquarters in Port Moresby,” Baki said. 

An experienced detective, Yamasombi said that he was looking forward to the new command and challenge. Baki also announced new commanders for the restructured  Highlands, Southern and National Capital District/Central Division.

“Assistant Commissioner Teddy Tei (currently Highlands Division commander) will be the commander for the Western Highlands regional command covering Hela, Southern Highlands and Enga,” he said.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Nema Mondia (currently Mamose Division commander) will head Eastern Highlands region  covering Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Eastern Highlands and Simbu”.

Tei and Mondia said the creation of the new Highlands commands would enable them to enforce law and order more effectively in the highly volatile region.

Assistant crimes director Chief Supt Peter Guinness will command the new Mamose Division that covers Morobe-Madang and Lae Metro.

Madang commander Chief Supt Sylvester Kalaut will be the new commander for National Capital District/Central and Acting Assistant Commissioner Jerry Frank moves from there to  headquarters in Konedobu to head the traffic.

Assistant  Commissioner Francis Tokura will be the Bougainville commander.

Internal Affairs director Chief Supt Victor Isouve will head crimes from headquarters while the officer-in-charge of transnational crime Chief Insp Mosses Ibsagi will be his deputy. 

A crimes officer based at headquarters, Chief Insp Ben Turi, will become the Port Moresby Metro Commander while the officer holding that post currently, Supt Andy Bawa, will become Mondia’s deputy. New commanders have been appointed for provinces.

Chief Insp Peter Philips for East Sepik, Snr Insp John Midi for New Ireland, Chief Insp Michael Welly for Hela, Chief Insp Jim Namora for West New Britain, Chief Insp Lincoln Gerari for Northern, Chief Inspr Jacob Singura for Madang, Chief Insp Sailas Wayagure for Gulf, Chief Insp Siliwa Sika for Manus, Supt Tep Puri for Western, Supt Alex N’Drasal for Eastern Highlands, Supt John Kale for West Sepik, Chief Supt Kaiglo Ambane for East New Britain, Supt Augustine Wampe for Morobe  and Supt Antony Wagambie jnrr) for Lae Metro.

 Meanwhile, Baki said appointments made outside NCD should be at the new posts by Dec 31 and those appointed for NCD be at their new command by Oct 31.
