PNG’s constitutional democracy has come undone in the past six months by cruel and desperate individuals within the current government.
The Supreme Court’s decision on the standing of the prime minister is indicative of constitutional democracy.
The move on the parliament floor soon after the declaration of the legitimate prime minister has brought the Constitution into disrepute and the court functions into the mud.
The actions by the current government surprisingly did not bring out any comments or criticisms from the NGOs, unions or the wider community.
The unthinkable will happen if the laws and the courts are not being protected given the recent moves in parliament without any due respect for the Constitution.
The recent move to defer the election dates is another blow.
The people must take ownership of the Constitution or we will turn into a banana republic very soon.
