PAPUA New Guineans should not take advantage of the Government’s decision to repeal the death penalty, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guine (PNG) head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame says.
“We appreciate the repeal of the death penalty but citizens must not take advantage of the repeal to commit serious crimes,” he said.
“Every citizen has a duty to respect the State authority and obey the laws of the country.
“Life imprisonment sets as a rule to guide human behaviour, so that we respect each other and live by the laws or the country.
“Churches have raised their voice against the death penalty because the commandment of God says we shall not take the life of another person away.
“Life is sacred and is a gift of God which we must respect at all times.
“We thank the Government for the decision which reflects our Christian values and principles.”
