THE Royal Papua New Guinea Police Constabulary uniform must be worn with respect and pride, says Police Minister Jelta Wong.
Wong, who was appalled at seeing a picture of police officers in uniform circulated on Facebook, said he had already issued directives for the officers to be identified and disciplined.
“An investigation is currently underway with regard to the recent social media images and disciplinary actions will be undertaken accordingly.
“As the Minister for Police, I remind all members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary that their uniform is something to be proud of and respected at all times,” Wong said. He said the uniform was a source of pride and respect and reflects public order.
“When the public sees the colour of the police uniform from afar, they are reassured that the police is there to protect them and to ensure there is order and harmony.
“People look up to you as the keeper of peace, so you should wear that uniform with pride and not misuse the trust placed in you when you were issued, the uniform,” Wong said.
He said it was incumbent on police officers to respect their uniform and to avoid any action that could tarnish the force’s image.
“As part of the ongoing professional development programme that we are currently establishing, we will be reminding all officers of the importance of representing the police force in a professional manner that is respected by the local and international communities alike.”
A police source confirmed that the officers are attached with South Fly Police and based in Daru, Western.
The source said police only became aware of the photo when it went viral on Facebook this week.
