The results are out and Resurrection Primary in Northern has topped the province in the grade 8 national examination – with 47 per cent of the pupils now going to high and secondary schools this year.
Mathematics teacher Yasuhiko Sugihara, a Japanese volunteer, said the aim this year is to get more than 50 per cent to go into higher learning.
In his first year with the school, he said the key has been to make the students enjoy maths.
Forty-eight out of 110 graduates passed last year, he said.
“20 students went to Martyrs Memorial Secondary school, 16 students to Popondetta Secondary School and 12 to Embogo Provincial High School,” he said.
Sugihara said mathematics should be taught in a fun-filled way.
“I teach this using cold water, I teach assuming daily life, lessons are taken inside and outside the classroom,” he said.
“The students are deeply aware of mathematics in their daily life.”
Sugihara said students make mistakes, but that is good for their future.
“Other students should not laugh at those who make mistakes,” he said.
“I also do supplementary lessons at lunchtime or after school to help the student understand the content of the lesson.”
