RETIRED Senior Constable Simon Yauwo has recovered a police-issued gun after three years of investigations at his own cost.
The gun went missing in Morobe’s Huon Gulf after an ex-policeman was knocked unconscious in a road accident near the Morobe Primary School.
Yauwo said the accident occurred at 9pm and the driver (an ex-policeman) was unconscious as teachers, students and the public rushed to the accident scene.
Yauwo, formerly attached with the police criminal investigation forensic science and police photographer in Lae for 18 years from 1985, retired in 2001.
He started inquiries into the missing gun in 2019.
Yauwo said a Grade 8 student from Popoe’s Owasi Ward 18 picked up the gun at the accident scene and fled, although he was attending examinations in school.
The gun surfaced during a family fight in Owazi village and police only managed to arrest the people involved in the fight.
However, Yauwo pursued his investigations after a tip-off from a local knowledge and recovered the gun.
“It took me three years using my own expenses totalling K2,800 (personal needs K600 and zoom and dinghy hire at K2,200) used for investigations in Owazi, Popoe, Bau, Sowara, Bowera and Egabawa to recover the weapon.
“After several attempts and negotiations, the weapon was retrieved from the suspect and will be submitted together with an investigations report,” he added.
