A FORMER doctor and senior health officer in Vanimo, West Sepik, has appeared in court over the alleged killing of a woman last Wednesday.
Police said Marcus Woibun was arrested and locked up that same night. He appeared in the Vanimo District Court last Friday.
The incident happened at Dali-Makepa in Vanimo where Woibun had resided after
retiring in 1999 as the provincial health adviser.
A Vanimo hospital spokesman said the deceased was brought to the hospital after she was shot but died later.
Hospital chief executive officer Elias Kapavore said  hospital workers tried their best to save her but her internal organs had been badly injured after the bullet hit her lower back and came out of the abdomen.
Kapavore said they tried acceleratory surgery but the blood loss was too severe. The woman died at about eight that night.
When news of her death reached her relatives, they went and burnt Woibun’s residence in Dali-Makepa that night.
Woibun had already been arrested when his home was razed.
Police could not confirm the motive behind the killing but said the situation was under control.
