Retiring cops will affect ops: Cop

ABOUT 50 policemen and officers in Western Highlands are retiring in September and this will affect police manpower, commander Chief Insp Jacob Kamiak says.
“They currently serve in various divisions and we are already struggling with our crime enforcement operations due to manpower and logistics shortages,” he said.
Chief Insp Kamiak said Mt Hagen was the business hub for the Highlands region and it was facing an influx rural-city migration.
“Mt Hagen needs more police manpower to curb the increasing crime rates,” he said.
“Law and order should be everyone’s concern.”
Chief Insp Kamiak said some murders in the city were pay-back killings from the people of Enga, Hela and Southern Highlands.
“Most of the problems are caused by people migrating into Mt Hagen,” he said.
“To deal with them, we need manpower and logistical support.”
Chief Insp Kamiak appealed to leaders to help police mobility to attend to issues and crimes.
“Replacing the 50 retirees in September is, therefore, most urgent,” he said, adding that the people could also help to create a safer environment for all.
