WRITS for the recently completed South Bougainville by-election will be returned on July 22, Electoral commissioner Patilias Gamato says.
This follows the election of People’s Progress Party candidate Timothy Masiu as new South Bouganville MP last Monday.
Gamato announced that the return of writs was moved to next Friday after initially scheduling the return for yesterday.
He commended the people for the successful by-election that was largley trouble-free and said he was happy with the results.
‘In fact, South Bougainville set the record in the counting process, as normally the counting takes five to six days but South Bougainville did it in three days,” Gamato said.
“That’s a milestone achievement in South Bougainville.
“I want to congratulate returning officer John Itanu, acting election manager Tani Tulo and the people of South Bougainville for a good job on the by-election.
“I also thank Bougainville leaders for their support of the by-election in South Bougainville.
“I also congratulate the newly-elected MP for South Bougainville.”
