ENGA’S Kompiam-Ambum returning officer Beto Pokola who was shot and injured in an ambush by two gunmen on Sunday is well and ready to resume duties, provincial elections manager Anton Iamau says.
“Pokola sustained a pallet wound on an arm from a shot fired in the afternoon attack,” he said. “He was rushed to Wabag General Hospital.
“We are still unable to confirm or deny whether the attack was General Election 2022 (GE22)-related.”
Commander Chief Inspector Epenes Nili said Pokale was on his way to town when two gunmen ambushed him at the Ambum Bridge.
“The CID (criminal investigation division) is currently investigating the shooting,” he said.
“We are still unable to say whether the shooting was GE22-related.
“But Pokale is fine. When he was ambushed, the gunmen open fire at his car but the bullets did not reach him. Only a pallet hit him in an arm.
“Police were with him last night in hospital where he was treated and later discharged.
“He is currently back at home and we have police monitoring him. We are treating this as a priority case.”
