Road accidents raise concerns

Letters

I AM writing in regards to the many fatal road accidents along our national highways as well as in our towns and cities.
Many of these incidents are known to be alcohol-related with fewer related to technical faults and road conditions.
Last month we heard terrible news about several lives being lost along the Lae-Nadzab section of the Highlands Highway.
This occurred due to the driver allegedly being under the influence of alcohol.
Another road accident along this same road last week resulted in more deaths including a student from University of PNG.
Several other incidents occur in Port Moresby due to drink driving and careless drivers not being conscious of the traffic rules.
I have witnessed drivers not abiding by traffic rules.
They drive as if it was their own private secluded road.
These include drivers of PMV buses in the city and others.
It now is becoming an issue in the country, unlike the rest of the world where there are safer drivers.
I am appealing to authorities to seriously address this issue before more lives are lost.
Make sure all vehicles are registered without faults, with licensed drivers who are not under the influence of liquor.
