A 3.5km road in Pomio, East New Britain, will be built at a cost of K5 million.
The project was launched yesterday by Mining Minister Johnson Tuke.
This is under the project agreement by the Government for the Sinivit Mine and was described as a “game changer” for the people of the area.
“I believe this road infrastructure is a game changer for the Sinivit local level government, Pomio district, East New Britain,” Tuke said. “This development has been the Government’s plan all along through the Sinivit project memorandum of agreement.
“Similar projects include the development of the Tari-Porgera road which is commitment under the Porgera mining project MOA and the Tolukuma Mine Access Road under the Tolukuma mining project MOA.
“The Government believes that this road will be the catalyst for changes in your lives, particularly in stimulating economic activities like transporting goods to the main market to sell.”
Tuke said the Government was aiming to ensure maximum benefits from mining by reviewing the laws that cover the sector.
“The Government is focused and determined to advance the various policy and regulatory initiatives and MOAs,” he said.
“These are being managed by the Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazards Management, and the Mineral Resource Authority and our line agencies.
“The review of the MRA Act and the Mining Act are some of the policy initiatives which the Government has undertaken to suit the Government’s development direction and aspirations.”
