PORT Moresby road runners raced over 7.2km from De la Salle College, Bomana, to the top of Mt Eriama and back on Saturday.
Ben Williams was the first to scale the ascent and touch the gates of the Eda Ranu Water Treatment facility at 14-mile, outside Port Moresby.
Despite a spirited chase by Tim Bulman, Williams increased his lead as he charged down the hill to win in 37.23, just over a minute in front of the determined Bulman.
Third runner and winning female was a enigmatic French-speaking athlete whose identity remained a mystery.
The race to the top was demanding.
However, with a half marathon coming up on Oct 28, runners will need to put in miles of hard work.
Kila Police Barracks at Gabutu is next Saturday’s destined venue.
