ROADS around Mendi town, in Southern Highlands, are undergoing upgrading.

Governor William Powi paid K2 million to Construct Oceanic Ltd, a local construction company, to upgrade the three-kilometre stretch from Kiburu to Magani Bridge.

Project officer Naik Boski said the work was nearing completion and had lifted the look of the town. “In the past, the roads were full of potholes and grass on the sides, he said. “Today the roads are sealed with footpaths on either side,” he said.

He said the next project would be the rehabilitation of the Mendi market as it was no longer suitable for farmers to sell their produce from.

Boski said other road sealing project would be undertaken as well. “We are expecting more developments to take place and people must respect the developments taking place and help contribute in anyway,” he said.

“I would like to thank the governor for giving priority to roads and bridge infrastructure in the province through which some of the rural areas that had struggled in the past years are having easy access to town,” he said.

He said roads upgrading and sealing were important as it helped other services to be delivered easily.

“Roads pave the way for developments and giving priority to roads and infrastructure is the best decision,” he said.
