Roadshow aims to attract Madang women to rugby

 PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football Union’s (PNGRFU) goal of spreading the code of women’s rugby continues as it reaches out to Madang province this week.

With the PNGRFU-sanctioned Madang Sevens tournament scheduled from Friday to Saturday, there will also be a women’s rugby roadshow as well starting today.

“It is the goal of the PNGRFU head office to introduce women’s rugby in more provinces around the country and to increase the numbers of female players participating, in the lead-up to the 2015 Pacific Games. We also see women’s rugby as gold medal contender in the Pacific Games and even qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil,” PNGRFU general manager Simon Kerr said.

Women’s PNG Palais representatives including seasoned players Jillian Yallon, Menda Ipat, Kaila Benny, Kymlie Rapilla, Cathy Neap and Freda Waula will be assisting in facilitating the exhibition matches between two teams that have been put together.

The two Madang women’s rugby teams that will be taking part in the two-day road show are the Clifton Royals and the Madang Divine Word University.

Prior to the tournament, the Palais representatives will visiting schools Divine Word University, Tusbab Secondary and Madang International tomorrow.
