TWO robbery suspects have escaped from custody at the Rabaul police station in East New Britain, raising safety concern among the community.

Police have identified them as Emil Robin of Malaguna, who was implicated in the armed robbery at JJ Seeto in Rabaul last year, and Willie Bernard Agome of Bogia in Madang, who was arrested in regards to the armed robbery at Lings Freezer in Rabaul last year.

Provincial police commander Superintendent Anthony Wagambie in a statement yesterday said they escaped when the duty police officer took them out of the cells during meal time.

Wagambie said officers who failed to carry out their duties would be dealt with appropriately.

“I am not at all happy with the escape of the two suspects  as it took long hours of investigation,  information gathering and lead-up work by detectives and response unit members to apprehend them,” he said.

“The suspects are a menace to the community and threat to the business houses in Rabaul. I appeal to the community that if they have any information that could assist police, please come forward so that we get these two back behind bars.”
