Roo: Act needs to be reviewed

THE current Fire Service Act of 1962 is more than 50 years old and needs to be reviewed, chief fire officer Bill Roo says.
Roo told The National yesterday that his office conducted an internal consultation workshop on the Act and was now holding the first consultation workshop for external stakeholders in New Guinea Islands in Kokopo, East New Britain.
The PNG Fire Service senior management team is currently holding a three-day workshop which began yesterday and ends tomorrow.
Roo said the purpose of the workshop was to get the views of the external stakeholders, business houses, provincial authorities, insurance companies and architects on the review of the Act.
“We are now reviewing this Act and also making amendments and that is why it is important we hold these external stakeholder workshops so that we can get views on the Act,” he said.
Roo said the PNG Fire Service team met with provincial administrator Wilson Matava yesterday and he supported the review.
He said the PNG Fire Service team would visit the four district development authorities of Kokopo, Rabaul, Gazelle and Pomio as part of the consultation process.
Roo said after Kokopo, they would visit Lae, Mt Hagen and Port Moresby.
