Roo calls for review of Fire Act

THE PNG Fire Service hosted a forum with stakeholders in East New Britain recently to collect views towards reviewing its Act of 1962.
According to chief fire officer Bill Roo, the Fire Service Act of 1962 was more than 50 years old.
“It needs to be reviewed to reflect and capture a modern PNG Fire Service,” he said.
“The roles and responsibilities of the fire service has changed in the last 50 years and this has to be properly captured in the Act. It is important to have the Act reviewed as some of the clauses have become outdated and may not comply with new laws and regulations.
“They may not address new systems or technology or may not be inconsistent with current practices.
“The Act has been incorporated for the purpose of preventing fire disaster and providing rescue operations and first aid to maintain public safety and protect lives and properties.”
