PEOPLE have been warned to be careful about buying firecrackers, Christmas lights and decorations which can start fires.
PNG Fire Service chief Bill Roo, pictured, said some decorations and fire crackers were fake and could start fires at home.
“People purchasing Christmas lights to decorate their homes must ensure to check the wirings, the adapter and also the manufacturing details to protect their homes and loved ones from fire,” Roo said.
“I also call on everyone to celebrate peacefully and be mindful of their surroundings, especially if they choose to celebrate with fireworks and firecrackers.
“They must be mindful of the surroundings and ensure that the area has no flammable substances which can catch fire easily.”
Roo said the fire service would continue its 24/7 operations through the festive season.
“I want to also thank the Government for being good to us, and The National newspaper for the coverage and support throughout the year,” Roo said.
“The paper was very supportive and vocal in the fight for PNG Fire Service to be recognised as an essential service-provider.”
Roo said firefighters would be on standby to protect families and homes from fires over the Christmas holiday.
