A FIRE which claimed a life in Port Moresby is alleged to have been caused by the overheating of an UPS that supports the operation of pokie machines at a club.
Chief fire officer Bill Roo said this yesterday when announcing the completion of investigations into a fire that occurred last month at the Gordon industrial hub.
The property owned by Sunshine Group was leased to four tenants – Kaki Club, Toda Auto Parts, Whistle Momo Café and KMC.
Roo said investigations concluded that the fire originated from the west side ground floor of Kaki Club.
He said: “During examination and excavation significate, fire damage was discovered within the area where the UPS was located.
“Therefore, we have concluded that the probable cause of the fire would have been triggered by overheating of the UPS that supports the running of more than 60 pokie machines at the Kaki Club.”
Roo, while releasing the report, stressed the importance for all sectors to conduct fire safety risk assessment at their work places and homes, and conduct fire safety training for employees to prevent fire and save lives.
“Different occupancies housed under one roof should have better fire separation walls that would prevent or minimise fires from spreading from one occupancant to the other,” he said.
