EAST New Britain’s Rabaul Stallions, competing for the first time in the NiuPower Sports Tok Sevens, beat Juggernauts 24-10 to pocket K5,000 and the women’s title.
Stallions are the reigning champions of the Sepik Agmark Nines and the Sports Tok title adds another trophy under coach Godfrey Stanis.
In a thrilling showdown at Bava Park in Port Moresby, Juggernauts were the danger side in attack, fielding several super star players, including multi-sport athlete Joanne Logona.
Stallions struck first with a corner try before Logona made a 50m line-break to level the score at 5-5.
Stallions were better in the ruck area as they attacked well to trouble Juggernauts.
Juggernauts executed well, but were denied on several occasions.
The visitors scored three unanswered second-half tries to beat Juggernauts.
“This is a huge achievement for the team and the province,” Stanis said.
“We all know that most outside centres are reviving rugby union.
“But we kept pushing to attend such tournaments for the love of the game.
“To come here for the first time and win the title is a proud moment for our team and province.”
Meanwhile Stanis said ENB Rugby Union was looking to establish a competition.
He said it would widen the catchment of players in the province.
