The National – Tuesday, August 2nd 2011

THE police raid of more than 100 homes as reported in The National (July 27) in the Lower Waghi area of Margarima is uncalled for.

The police must stop such raids as they are illegal and unacceptable.

Police are supposed to provide security, ensure peace and safety of the people.

What is reported is shocking and, if true, will definitely put the state at liability.

The actions of police in similar situations in the past had cost the state millions of kina.

While we condemn the actions of drunken youths that led to the raid, police did not exhaust all avenues to apprehend the culprits to make them face the full force of the law.

Community leaders are to assist police maintain peace and order.

However, the raid was conducted before the community leaders could help the police.

I call on the police commissioner to send a team to investigate the incident.
