The Kavieng Rugby Football League (KRFL) is looking to reviving the sport in the New Ireland capital following its registration with PNGRFL.
KRFL completed their 9s competition last week and are preparing for the 13-a-side tournament which starts this weekend.
Rawal Warriors, Redlights Wanderers, Kopkop Brothers, Country, Boluminski Raiders, IBS Norths and West Side will be taking part in the tournament.
“Rugby League in Kavieng has been in the doldrums for four years and we are trying to return it back to its glory days like in the 80s and 90s when we produced many Kumuls in the likes of Aquila Emil, Allan Rero, John Yip, Bernard Lakur, Kungas Kuweu, Ngala Lapan, Steven Kapan and Yanga Pilakos,” interim president Mathew Kataka Jr said.
“We also have the development for school boys and women’s rugby being introduced with the help of three facilitators from Kokopo who recently completed a three-day clinic or refresher course for referees and coaches.”
