Rugby sevens on in capital

THE rugby sevens season kicks off this weekend in the capital, when Port Moresby Rugby Football Union (POMRFU) runs its sevens tournament from Oct 17-18.
The tournament will be  the foundation for POMRFUs Sevens side to the MRDC Sevens the following weekend as well as mark the champion club for the shortened version of the game in the capital.
A total of K1,950 in cash prizes has been confirmed together with the respective Cup, Plate, and Bowl categories in the men’s and women’s divisions.
Cup winners will pocket K1000 prize money for the men, and K500 for the women, courtesy of SP Brewerys Export Lager brand, while the Plate and Bowl winners in the mens will collect K300, and K150, through a cash sponsorship from Spectrum Ltd.
Eleven clubs from the local competition have confirmed participation in the men’s draw along with an U20 select side to complete three pools of four teams each.
All seven women’s teams from the local competition have also confirmed participation.
Brothers, University, Medics, and Wanderers will make up for Pool A in the mens, whilst Harlequins, Defence, Hunters and LaSallians make up Pool B.
Royals, Kone,Jets,  Chiefs and the U20 select side make up Pool C.
In the women’s, Chiefs, Brothers, Royals and Wanderers make up Pool A, and Defence, University and LaSallians are in Pool B.
Tournament organising representative, Lawrence Tamilong, extended his appreciation to SP Brewery and Spectrum Ltd for their support.
“SP Brewery through its SP Export Lager brand will sponsor the cash prizes for the Cup winners, and Spectrum Ltd the sponsor for the Plate and Bowl cash prizes, we are very thankful to both in their support for sevens rugby”.
Rugby sevens has been an avenue for pace, skill and entertainment, and is sure to unearth new and unknown talent for the game, over the two days.
