WOMEN of Maprik district, in East Sepik, are receiving training in the floriculture business to earn a living.
The first week-long training was held at the Foundation of Women in Agriculture Development in Maprik this week.
The foundation’s agriculture officer, Betty Ninawale said they planned to hold the training every quarter.
Ninawale said 11 women from the Maprik-Wora and Albiges-Mamblep local level governments attended.
She said the purpose was to train women on how to make flower arrangements for special and important events. “They learnt eight skills on flower arrangements and flower style,” Ninawale said.
The eight styles include :
l Posy – for table decoration;
l extension – for table decoration;
l a-line – for office wall decoration;
l bouquet – for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, funerals and farewell parties;
l large bucket – for graduation and church services;
l lacing – lacing pattern, and,
l Hair pin – for hair decoration.
Ninawale told the participants that floriculture was a growing industry.
“Women in Maprik must see the importance of floriculture. It is not just a backyard decoration,” she said. Ninagale said the village women must know they could earn good money from flowers. Women wanting to know more about the training can contact Ninawale on 3499047.
