Papua New Guinea Kapuls midfielder Jacob Sabua has signed up with the Malaita Kings Football Club of Solomon Islands to bolster their midfield attack.
The 23-year-old played in the World Cup qualifier against Tahiti and Solomon Islands early this year and will join Kings in the Solomon Islands National Soccer League.
Sabua arrived in Honiara last Wednesday and played his first match last Sunday against Western United.
The soft-spoken midfielder thanked the Kings for giving him the opportunity to develop his talent in the Solomon Islands premier competition.
Hailing from Buang in Morobe, Sabua has played soccer since primary school.
“I feel excited, it’s another step in my football career so I am feeling happy playing here,” said Sabua.
The code was part of his life from childhood to his teenage years, and that had given him a strong belief in his ability.
Sabua started his football career playing in a registered competition while studying at Nawae Secondary School in Morobe.
He debuted with the Sogeram soccer club as a winger in the Lahi Soccer Association, and was recruited into the PNGFA Soccer Academy in Lae.
While at the academy in 2009, he trailed for PNGFA’s development side — Besta United — made the squad and had been playing in the PNG’s National Soccer League ever since.
Sabua had a short run with the Lae City Dwellers last month before his signing with Kings.
His favourite player is English legend David Beckham.
“David Beckham is my favourite soccer player. I watch clips of him every week when I can and it helps me in my game.”
His family in Lae are proud of his achievement and are all backing him to achieve his dream to be a professional footballer one day.
