Sackings of heads an alarming trend
The National, Thursday 23rd Febuary 2012
THE current spate of suspensions and sackings of heads of statutory organisations is quite alarming and degrades our political, social and economic ratings in the eyes of the world.
In the short time that the current government has been in power, we have seen heads of state entities being removed without the opportunity to even discuss or explain the allegations made towards him/her.
One general manager, who has been replaced, had demonstrated best business practices, good management skills and contributed to business growth.
His removal by politicians is both immoral and denies his rights to defend himself in a proper forum.
These political cleansings create a sense of insecurity and uncertainty and have the potential to create social unrest in the country.
I am calling on the prime minister and his deputy to put a stop to these sackings immediately and get on with their business of governing the nation.
Leave business entities to run and manage their affairs without political intervention and intimidation.
In the event that the government needs to step in, it must be done with proper procedures under the law and company policy guidelines, instead of resorting to authoritarian or “mafia gang” tactics.
If the government is hell-bent
on its drive to weed out corruption, then it must also work within the confines of the laws of this nation.
The government must not breach what it preaches, otherwise people will also follow suit in their own vigilante tactics.
Such negative citizen reactions are now emerging with the chief justice defying the cabinet’s decision to sideline him, unlawful storming at Boram Airport by police and residents of East Sepik, landowners’ unruly behaviour at Vulupindi Haus, just to name a few.
These are frightening signs of worse things to come.
With due respect, I call on the prime minister and his deputy to be transparent in their dealings with these entities.
Make public to us, the citizens, all the reasons why heads of these entities have been or will be removed.
You must come out clear on all your decisions as you are answerable to the people of this nation.
After all, these public entities are ours and people deserve to know why you are sacking some of our best business leaders.
It is both unacceptable and rude for the government to use the term “alleged misconduct” as a reason.
Please stop the “sacking rollercoaster” now before it transforms itself into a kamikaze.
