SAINTS began their Port Moresby Basketball Association season with a 32-31 win over Chariots in the men’s premier division at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre on Monday night.
They are aiming for the finals under the mentorship of Lawrence Lahari.
“It has been a long wait, with the Coronavirus and general election,” Saints coach Lahari told The National on Monday.
“We’re looking forward to the season.
“Our aim is to finish in the top-four.”
But their women’s team had a rough start with a 12-41 loss to Chariots.
Tamaraws beat Exodus 44-33 in Monday’s other men’s match.
Meanwhile, Lahari said the club was looking forward to an exciting season with a lot of talented players aiming to stamp their mark in the competition.
“At this stage, we only have the men’s and women’s divisions,” he said.
“Once the association establishes a junior division, we will field teams in it too. We are expecting a good turn-out this season.”
One of the oldest clubs in the association, Saints have links to Queensland’s St Peters Lutheran College.
They have produced top basketball players, and aim to continue doing so while promoting discipline and positive attitudes.
“The club was formed by former students of the college,” Lahari said.
“It is from here that the name was coined. We have always produced representative players.
“We’re not only developing good basketballers, but also ensuring that we have great role models,” Lahari told this paper earlier this week.
