MRM Saints claimed the second leg of the Satellite Sevens rugby union tournament in Western following a 26-14 win over Sewirimabu Seeds in the Cup final at Sewirimabu village in Kiwai Rural, South Fly.
Tournament official Petero Kilori said it was a smaller turnout for the second leg, however, there was still strong competition from the participating teams over the New Year weekend.
“The second leg of the tournament was hosted by Sewirimabu, so the event was named the Sewirimabu Cup,” he said. “The second leg of the tournament at Sewirimabu village had only 11 teams due to the short turnaround from the first leg and most teams weren’t able to attend.
“Saints proved too strong against the home team, Sewirimabu Seeds.
“The player of the tournament and Paul Joseph Golden Boot winner went to Ose Kings’ Talia Penia, from Masingara village, the hosts of the first leg.”
Kilori said the last leg of the tournament was scheduled for this weekend at Wamrong Pahuturi with up to 40 teams expected to take part.
“The first leg of the tournament was held at Masingara village in Oriomu Bituri and we had 24 teams take part,” he said.
“The last leg will have the golden boot awardee named after Cecil Iakoe while the silver boot will be named after Junior Parr, both of whom are big names in rugby union in Western.”
