THE Morobe government is partnering with Lae district to improve the image of Lae by installing new rubbish bins around the city.
Governor Ginson Saonu told The National yesterday after returning from overseas that the installation of these bins was an initiative of his government to assist Lae in its clean-up campaigns.
“We are not trying to compete with the Lae district and city council as some may think,” he said.
“What we are doing is supporting and working alongside the MP (John Rosso) to improve the city’s image.
“Lae is the face of Morobe and PNG so it’s important to beautify and clean it.
“I have the whole province to look after but I am doing my little bit to help Lae.”
Saonu said he believed in starting with small things and achieving big things later in terms of development.
He said the installation of the bins was also a way of educating residents to change their negative habits and take ownership of the city’s cleanliness.
“The company we’ve engaged has so far installed about 15 to 20 new bins around parts of the city,” Saonu said.
“We have not paid the company yet, but we have advised them to put up the bins so that we can get reactions from members of the public. If they liked the new rubbish bins and welcome them, we will roll out to all parts of the city.”
The polyethylene (plastic) bins are installed by contractor Nationwide Waste Management Ltd.
