Saonu wants parlt to recognise former MPs
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu has called on Parliament to give special recognition to current and former MPs.
Saonu said all MPs should gain automatic recognition in the Queen’s award on their merit.
“All of us in this parliament will join this club. So this issue is very important and must be addressed now for the benefit of all former members and future MPs,” he said.
“I understand that the PNG Parliament is a registered member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which gives former members automatic membership.”
He said all members of the parliament were entitled to perks and privileges under the terms and conditions of the CPA arrangements.
Saonu said the entitlements should be considered and regulated by parliament and be included in the Retirement Benefit Fund payments for all former MPs fortnightly. He called on the Speaker to engage a committee to compile the report on the requirements under CPA.
“Former members of parliament must gain automatic recognition for the Queens awards on her merits. All of us in this parliament will join this club,” he said.
Deputy Speaker Jeffrey Komal said the questions would be answered in due course.
