Sapia questions poor attendance of MPs at provincial assembly
RAICOAST MP Peter Sapia says six MPs in Madang have never been part of its provincial assembly.
He asked Minister for Inter-Government Relations Kevin Isifu why the MPs had not attended the assembly since they were elected members.
He asked if there were any provisions in the organic law stopping the MPs from being members of the provincial assembly and participating in the decision-making of the provincial government. Sapia said some council presidents who had resigned to contest the 2017 general election had been sworn in as members of the provincial executive council and the provincial assembly. He said the provincial government under Governor Peter Yama allowed that.
Isifu said there was no law stopping MPs from attending the provincial assembly but he would seek legal advice on the issue as he did not want to mislead Parliament.
He said some LLG presidents had to go to court to be allowed to get back their seats as presidents and as members of the provincial assembly.
