FORMER army officer Yaura Sasa, facing a charge of mutiny, has convinced the court to defer his trial until the Supreme Court decides on the legitimacy of the government.
Sasa’s lawyer, Tony Waisi, asked magistrate Cosmas Bidar to suspend the proceedings arguing that his client’s case was connected to the two special references before the Supreme Court.
Waisi told the court his client’s case should be adjourned until the Supreme Court made a decision on the references. Bidar agreed.
Sasa, a former commissioned officer who had been retrenched, was arrested after he led a band of soldiers that raided Murray Barracks headquarters on Jan 26.
They then placed PNG Defence Force Commander Brig-Gen Francis Agwi under house arrest.
Sasa was released on a K2,500 bail on Feb 1.
Sasa had been appointed head of the defence forces by the government of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
