Scheme recognises designer

A SCHOLARSHIP named after Papua New Guinea flag designer late Susan Karike Huhume for underprivileged girls was recently launched in Ramu, Madang.
Launched by Soroptimist International Ramu Inc, the Susan Karike Huhume Memorial Scholarship will help educate girls who come from disadvantaged homes.
Huhume’s husband, Nanny said his family were grateful and honoured to allow his wife’s name to be used for the scholarship at the launch.
“I’m grateful for this,” Nanny said.
“My wife died in 2017 and there was no proper recognition given to her.
“Naming this scholarship after her is part of recognising her and I’m grateful to Soroptimist International for this,” he said.
Soroptimist International Ramu Inc president Kimberly Berem said K15,000 would be allocated annually by the scholarship to help five girls to attend schools starting next year.
She explained that the amount was symbolic as that was how old Huhume was (15) when she designed the flag.
The scholarship will support five girls at tertiary institutions and senior high school.
“We hope to seek funds from the Government and other agencies to support the scholarship.
“Susan wasn’t given proper recognition until she passed away and this scholarship is part of recognising her contribution to the country,” Berem said.
“Through the scholarship, her legacy will live on.
“For a start, we will get one female each from Soroptimist’s five clubs in the country to be sponsored next year.”
Berem said the scholarship would look to expand and include more girls but this would depend on the support it received.
Soroptimist International has clubs in 122 countries and with five in PNG.
