FOUR students charged with burning a building in their school last month have been refused bail.
Police said more arrests were likely.
The four were arrested in Finschhafen, Morobe, last week following the burning of a building at Dregerhafen Secondary School on April 23.
The suspects, according Morobe police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal, were students of the school who were allegedly at the school at the time of the incident.
“These suspects have been charged, they appeared in court and are now in custody at Buimo jail,” he said.
N’Drasal said investigations were still going on and there was likely to be more arrests.
Meanwhile, a decomposing body of a girl between 16 and 17 years old was found washed ashore at Dregerhafen Beach last week.
The body was found by a member of the Dregerhafen Secondary School. With the help of others, they buried it quickly as it was decomposing.
N’Drasal said there was no lead to the death or the cause of the death yet.
“Police have not received any reports from villagers or anyone as yet of any missing people over the last two weeks,” he said.
He said police are expecting more reports to come to verify and identify the body.
He said police found multiple wounds on the neck, armpits, private part and on the head that suggested the girl may have been killed somewhere and dumped into the sea.
In another police case, a 26-year-old man was murdered on Saturday night at Yalu village, Wampar, in the Huon Gulf.
N’Drasal said the deceased was of mixed parentage from Kubalia in East Sepik and Yalu in Morobe.
He said the man was shot and later stabbed with a knife.
“Police has detained a suspect for this murder. The suspect is also the witness to the killing,” N’Drasal said.
He said investigations were still going on.
