GAULIM Demonstration Primary School in Inland Baining local level government of Gazelle, East New Britain ,has taken the initiative to build its own infrastructure.
Last year, the school administration decided to build a two-in-one building which would include the school hall and the administration block.
The school was assisted by the Wan Pipol Music Festival committee which initiated a fund raising drive for the project.
The festival was organised and hosted in 2018 and helped the school to get the building project started.
According to school board chairman Joseph Toboga, the total cost of the building project was K158,000.
Toboga said that part of that funding came from the Gaulim Teachers College while the other half was from the funds raised from the music festival.
“We were not able to complete the construction of the building because we didn’t have enough funds but Wan Pipol Music Festival coordinator John Yass initiated the fund raising drive which included a cultural festival and battle bands two weeks ago,” he said.
A total of K20,172 was raised and on Friday, a cheque was presented to the school administration.
Originally from Karkar Island, Madang, Yass, who spent most of his life in Gaulim, said even though he was not from the area he had a heart for the people.
Yass is of Madang and Bougainville parentage with his father being the principal of Gaulim Teachers College while his mother is the
head teacher at Gaulim Primary School.
“This is one way we can give back to the community that is why we are focusing on schools and health,” he said.
