DON Bosco Technical Secondary School (DBTS) held its first culture expo on Friday.
DBTS principal Martin Dai said this was in honour of St John Bosco’s 204th birthday, ending the week-long Foundation Day celebrations.
Dai said the event was unique as it was the first time for any school to host a culture expo.
“We encouraged our boys to put up a quality show because we don’t want people to just come and watch but also learn and the same for our boys.”
The significance of the cultural show was the painting of Don Bosco in different cultural attires and traditional model houses that were built.
The 941 students were involved in traditional cooking, weaving, bilum making and carving of crafts, canoe making and other typical traditional practices from the 22 provinces were observed. Only 15 students from each province took part in the traditional dances as the school wanted the rest of the students to be involved in other aspects of PNG’s rich culture.
Dai said: “The show is really showing the uniqueness of our culture and the boys are learning.”
“Life is becoming hard and we need to use our creativity to make earns meet.”
Dai said parents were very supportive of the event and helped their children to make the event possible.
He said the boys had some struggles looking for the materials but have managed to complete everything on time and were ready.
“The idea is when our students go back to their home provinces, they should be able to contribute effectively in their societies and not just be looked upon as kids from Port Moresby,” Dai added.
