School in Morobe to remain closed this year, official says
BUNSIL High School in Siassi, Morobe, will remain close for this year, provincial programme adviser Keith Tangui says.
Bunsil was established in 2019 but was shut down soon due to lack of funds to maintain its operations.
Last year, the Morobe education board planned a consultative meeting with affected students and parents seeking to submit a report to the Morobe government, requesting funds to reopen the school this year.
But Tangui told The National that the school would remain closed to focus on getting its infrastructure in place to reopen next year.
“Bunsil is the only school non-operational in Morobe this year,” he said.
“Any other school that will stop operating will be determined by the enrolment figures that come in and the head teacher’s reports.”
Tangui said Bugandi Secondary School and Salamaua High School were on the provincial education board’s list for further investigation.
“We’ve never received any acquittals from Salamaua and Bugandi since I became the provincial programme adviser last year,” he said.
“They don’t have governing boards to run the school; the principal runs it as a one-man show.
“This is a very bad precedent they’ve set and have let it erode for quite a long period of time.
“This year, we’ll get to it and make sure that people who misused the system are brought to justice.
“We will suspend or terminate them.”
