A building housing six classrooms built at a cost of K350,000 at a primary school in Morobe was named after the late former Chief Ombudsman Chronox Manek.
Nawaeb chief executive officer James Niapukali said the building took almost 14 months to complete because of funding delays.
The six-in-one classroom at Boana Primary School in Nawaeb comes complete with furniture, including chairs, tables, blackboards and other essential classroom equipment.
Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge said the funds for the classroom came from the district development authority (DDA).
He said the building was named the “Chronox Manek” building after the late former chief ombudsman who passed away in 2012.
Manek was a pioneer student of the school.
Wenge said they named the building after a pioneer student who had gone on to become a notable individual for the State.
He said plans were underway to improve other schools in other parts of the district.
Wenge said there had been issues with a contractor building the classroom but they had managed to resolve them, but, would ensure only the most capable contractors were awarded projects in future.
He said the DDA had noted that there were other incomplete projects in the district, hence, the need for better oversight.
While opening the classroom, the DDA also launched machinery for the district works unit to maintain its existing road infrastructure.
He said the four LLGs in the district had road access connecting them to Lae and that meant each would have its own machinery to be used by the district works unit to maintain roads.
Niapukali said the road equipment included a front-end loader, a dump truck and a four-door land cruiser bought by the district development authority.
“Our main road from Erap to Boana is constantly experiencing damage and we have our development partners using the road frequently so we need to fix it properly,” he said.
